Introducing ‘Workflow’ and ‘Releases’

We are excited to announce two powerful new features in Contentstack: ‘Workflow’ and ‘Releases’. Workflow lets you better manage your content lifecycle, while ‘Releases’ makes deployment easier during an event or announcement.

With these two new features, managing large amounts of content in Contentstack becomes significantly easier and more sophisticated. Read on for more details about these features.

‘Workflow’ for content lifecycle management

Workflow lets you streamline the process of content creation and publishing. It lets you define the stages (draft, ready for review, needs SEO tags, complete, etc.) of your content lifecycle, and establish and enforce approval processes for publishing content. It ensures that the right people get the right content at the right stage in the content lifecycle.

A Workflow is made up of two elements: Workflow Stages and Publish Rules.

  • Workflow Stages

  • Workflow Stages are the stages (or states) which your content “travels” through on its way to being published. Contentstack provides two stages by default (‘Draft’ and ‘Complete’). You can add custom stages between the two default stages, depending on the content creation/review process of your team.

  • Publish Rules

  • Publish Rules define the approval process in order to publish content to an environment. Once you add approvers for content types, corresponding entries can only be published if the approver(s) approve the publishing request.

‘Releases’ for managing big events, campaigns

‘Releases’ is a boon for content managers and marketers. It eases the process of managing content associated with major events, campaigns, or product releases for your team. You can combine a collection of entries/assets into a single Release, and then deploy this Release to an environment at the time of your choosing, to support your event or campaign.

This ensures that all the changes (e.g., website homepage change, new blog post, in-product announcements, removal of older pages) related to a critical event occur across all your digital properties, at the same time, and exactly how and when you want them to go live.

Creating a Release is easy. As soon as you open your stack, you will see ‘Releases’ in the header. Click on it, and create a Release with a name of your choice. Then, you can add any entry or asset to this Release.
