Change Your Subscription or Add-Ons
Note These instructions are for anyone who created their Contentstack account through the sign-up page, on Free, Build, or Growth plans. The Manage Subscription section is only visible to the organization owner. If your organization is on an Enterprise tier, reach out to our support team to make any changes.
When you need less, you can move to a lower subscription option, which takes effect at your next billing date. When you need more of something, you have two ways to get it. Move to a higher subscription option to raise everything at once, or buy an add-on to raise one limit while staying on your current subscription.
Which one you need depends on the resource. Metered resources such as API requests, bandwidth, and AI credits are governed by your subscription and by extra usage. Fixed resources such as users, stacks, and entries are raised with add-ons.
Which Approach to Choose
- Change your subscription when you need more of several things at once, or when you need a feature your current subscription does not include, such as custom roles or custom workflows.
- Buy an add-on when you need more of one thing and the rest of your subscription suits you. Adding two users costs less than moving to a higher subscription option for the sake of two users.
- Allow extra usage when the resource is metered and your need is occasional rather than permanent. Refer to the Track and Extend Your Subscription Usage documentation.
To compare subscription options and see current pricing, go to the pricing page.
Prerequisites
- Contentstack account
- Organization Owner permissions
- A payment card, for a first upgrade from Free
Move to a Higher Subscription Option
Moving from Free to a paid subscription option is your first payment, so Contentstack collects your card details on a secure payment page hosted by Stripe, its payment provider. Contentstack does not store your card number.
Once a card is on file, later subscription changes are charged to it directly and you see the amount before you confirm.
To change your subscription, log in to your Contentstack account and perform the steps below:
- Click your avatar in the top-right corner, and then click Manage Subscription. Contentstack opens the Subscription page in your account settings.
- Click Upgrade. Contentstack opens the Plans and Pricing page.
- Click the button for the subscription you want, such as Get Build or Get Growth. Your current subscription is marked Current plan and cannot be selected.
- Do one of the following:
- First payment: The payment page opens with your email address already filled in. Enter your card number, expiry date, and security code, the cardholder name, and your country and postal code, and then click Subscribe.
- Card already on file: Check the summary on Review Your Order, select the checkbox to authorize the charge, and click Confirm Payment. To change your selection, click Go Back.
Contentstack applies the new subscription immediately and returns you to your subscription. Your invoice arrives by email.
What the Payment Page Shows
- The subscription you are moving to, with the amount due today and the amount you pay each month from your next billing date. The amount due today covers only the days remaining in the current period.
- Separate lines for the usage-based parts of your subscription, such as AI credits, bandwidth, and API requests. These are listed as varying because they are charged on what you use, not up front.
- Tax, which stays uncalculated until you enter your address, and is then added to the total.
Note The payment page is hosted by Stripe. Your card details go directly to the payment provider, and Contentstack does not see or store your card number.
What Review Your Order Shows
- How many days remain in the current period, and the proportion you are charged for.
- A row for the subscription option you are moving to, and a row crediting the unused part of your current subscription.
- Charged Today, the difference between the two.
- Recurring Monthly Bill, what you pay from the next billing date onward. Expand it to see the breakdown.
Note The amount on Review Your Order is an estimate calculated at the moment the page loads, from the days remaining in your billing period. That figure keeps changing as the period elapses, so the amount charged can differ slightly if you wait before confirming. To be charged the amount you see, confirm the payment promptly. For the exact figure, check the invoice.
Move to a Lower Subscription Option
Downgrading is available on paid subscription options. It is scheduled rather than immediate. You keep your current subscription and its limits until the end of the billing period you have already paid for, and the lower option starts at your next billing date. Nothing is charged for the change.
- Click your avatar in the top-right corner, and then click Manage Subscription.
- On the subscription card, click the vertical ellipsis (⋮), and then click Downgrade. The ellipsis appears on paid subscription options only, so it is not available on Free.
- Choose the subscription option you want to move to. Contentstack shows the Plans and Pricing page and a comparison listing each resource with the limit on your current subscription, the limit on the option you have chosen, and your own usage.
- Click Continue to Downgrade. If Contentstack asks why you are downgrading, select a reason and click Continue; to stop at this point, click Keep My Plan.
- Review the summary on Review Your Order, and then click Confirm Downgrade. To change your selection, click Go Back.
Contentstack confirms with Downgrade Scheduled and offers Go To Manage Subscriptions to return to your subscription. You stay on your current subscription until your next billing date, when the lower option takes effect.
If Your Usage Exceeds the Lower Limits
You can only move to an option your current usage fits within. If any resource is over that option's limit, the dialog box says so, lists the resources concerned, and shows the figure you need to get each one down to. Continue to Downgrade is not offered until your usage fits.
Reduce the resources listed, then start again. If you are not sure what to remove, use Contact Support in the dialog box. When everything fits, the dialog box confirms that you are eligible to downgrade.
What Happens to Extra Usage and Add-Ons
- Extra usage settings stay active and are billed on what you actually use.
- Add-ons stay on your subscription until the downgrade takes effect at your next billing date, and are then removed automatically.
Note The downgrade dialog box also offers Cancel & Delete Subscription. That is a different action: it closes the account rather than moving it to a smaller subscription. Refer to the Cancel Your Subscription documentation.
Buy or Change Add-Ons
Add-ons raise an individual limit without changing your subscription. You can add users, stacks, content types, entries, assets, locales, and custom roles.
Note Add-ons are available on Growth. On other subscription options, the Add-ons section does not appear, and you raise limits by changing your subscription instead.
- On the Subscription page, in the Add-ons section, click Manage Add-Ons.
- For each add-on you want, click the plus icon to increase the quantity or the minus icon to decrease it.
Each card shows what one unit of that add-on gives you, how many units you currently use this month, and the change you are about to make with its monthly cost.
- Click Proceed to payment.
- Review the amount, and then confirm the payment.
Contentstack applies the new limits and returns you to your subscription.
Note Some add-ons are sold in blocks rather than single units. The quantity selector states the ratio next to each add-on, so check it before you set a quantity.
Warning Reducing an add-on quantity lowers your limit. If you already use more than the reduced limit allows, remove the extra users, stacks, or entries first. Otherwise the reduction fails.
How Changes Are Billed
Subscription changes and add-ons both take effect immediately and are prorated. Contentstack charges for the days remaining in the current period, then bills the full amount from the next billing date. Add-ons stay on your subscription until you remove them.
What Happens to Your Content
Changing your subscription or your add-ons does not affect your existing content, users, or API keys. Your stacks, entries, assets, and tokens are unchanged. Only your limits and available features change.
Additional Resource To monitor what you are consuming against your new limits, refer to the Track and Extend Your Subscription Usage documentation.
